Struggling with Putting http://www.golfgrinder.com/forums/discussion/198/struggling-with-putting Fri, 19 Aug 2011 07:28:16 -0400 tiger 198@/forums/discussions Hey Guys, At the moment i am really putting quite badly and the lack of confidence is coming from not being able to get the pace right. I literally spent like 2-2.5 hours on the putting green today, but i still can't nail it. It seems i can't get the pace properly because i keep 'Drop-Kicking' the putter and hitting the ground before the ball. I'm sure its more a confidence thing more than anything, but does anyone have any tips that could allow me to overcome this issue??

Stinks Quest for single figures http://www.golfgrinder.com/forums/discussion/196/stinks-quest-for-single-figures Thu, 18 Aug 2011 03:35:30 -0400 stinkler 196@/forums/discussions Hi guys. I've decided to bring the next stage of my journey here to gain some guidance in my quest to reach single figures.

I've had quite a trip elsewhere but this next stage requires the focus of a more refined input, so I'm directing this mainly at Dart and Guru with welcome interjections from the likes of Spike.

I've been playing solidly to 12 of late, last game with 38 putts! So yes, that's an important port of call.

Dart and Guru know my background, little TGM, Zenolink and CK's, so I trust them completely.

Below is my latest swing, not full, just a 2/3 PW. Here I hit 10 shots about 75/80 mtrs. All fairly good except the 3rd was a bit fat. All on 'manual' and impact fix which I use less on full shots, FYI. I was focusing on keeping my right leg/hip stable and pressing forward into my left side, sometimes it's not bad.

I'm happy with a heap of improvements but see some issues, wondering if you see the same ones? I'll let you go first :)

The putting questions I have first relate to eye dominance, of which I have NO understanding. Today from 5 feet I closed my left eye and all putts 6 missed left. When I closed my right eye I holed all 6. Does this tell you anything? (other than I should putt with my right eye closed)

I will put my putting stroke up soon.

Looking forward to chatting with you guys again very much.

Cheers, Scott.

Digging holes with Irons http://www.golfgrinder.com/forums/discussion/224/digging-holes-with-irons Tue, 11 Oct 2011 05:23:30 -0400 litzh 224@/forums/discussions I notice that most golfers take small or no divots when hitting irons. Not only do I take divots but most of the time they are craters. I am 63old with a replacement hip on the right last year which restricts my body rotation. I have tried to hit the irons flatter but then have the opposite affect in that I top the ball. Can anyone help?? Or is there help. Four years ago was playing too and off 9, but alas have trouble now staying under 18

Maybe that is the reason for his form reversal and not Steve Williams.

A Beginner's golf journey http://www.golfgrinder.com/forums/discussion/189/a-beginners-golf-journey- Sat, 06 Aug 2011 01:31:51 -0400 LMD 189@/forums/discussions Hey guys, some of you probably remember me from some of my threads from ISG, I started learning golf in Feb this year. Coached by a "pga AAA" coach for 3 months then moved on to self taught, and recently started taking lesson from Guru (paul smith).

Guru thinks it would be a good idea for me to keep track of my progress, so I decided to start a thread of my path to success or failure :)

some videos of my progress from day 1: my swing after 3 months under "pga coach."

Touch and Feel http://www.golfgrinder.com/forums/discussion/180/touch-and-feel Tue, 26 Jul 2011 20:07:00 -0400 drawball 180@/forums/discussions The guys I play with say I have great touch.

idgolfguy made me think over a few beers. I rather feel more of a robotic golfer than a touch player. I sort of know which clubs go how far rather than mixing it up with a guess.

I may change the length of a swing though always go with determination with the stroke. Feel players look to mix it up way more and score the same.

Interesting how the game can be played many ways to get the pill in the hole.

So how the heck do feel players learn it other than massive trial and error?

Chipping Advice http://www.golfgrinder.com/forums/discussion/169/chipping-advice Sun, 17 Jul 2011 06:03:56 -0400 grasscutter 169@/forums/discussions I am just off the green with about a 15 foot chip to the hole. The green is flat how do I get the ball to take a couple of bounces and check. Alternatively how do you chip the ball just on the green and get it to roll to the hole.

It does my head in trying to work this out. Is it all in the wrist?

Laid off shaft at startdown, optional player's preference http://www.golfgrinder.com/forums/discussion/168/laid-off-shaft-at-startdown-optional-players-preference Fri, 15 Jul 2011 15:15:17 -0400 Loren 168@/forums/discussions The names in here are links. Click on them to view.

Hands control of dynamic alignments golf rather than pivot control of "positions" golf.

There are only three places where you can make alignment adjustments; Impact position address (not mid-body address), the Top (right shoulder or end of backstroke if shorter) on the way down at the latest, and Finish for evaluating. The pivot should not be responsible for any alignments. It leads to all kinds of difficulties, misunderstandings and worthless tips.

Four Illustrations follow. The first is a laid off shaft of a different definition apparently than common pivot control of positions classical golf instruction definition. It was used by Hogan and Austin, Sergio uses it, The Dart uses or did use it and Singapore Slinger (Justin Tang) instructor par excellence before leaving the field to make a living.

Hands control, dynamic alignments, laid off shaft, poor instructor because his feel was not real, and he has one plane angle shift (OK, so did Moe):

Mike Austin

Hands control, dynamic alignments, no right wrist cock, shaft not laid off, no end of backswing shaft parallel down the line position attempted.
“If I try to get to parallel I lose power.”
As perfect a swing as they come.

JD Holmes

Hands control, dynamic alignments, not a laid-off shaft, no right wrist cock, turned shoulder plane angle, a good hands/wrists/arms structure illustrated, pretty good swing:

Taly Williams/Steve Stricker

One of the few really effective training aids but Taly’s instruction leaves something to be desired because he’s trying to teach his feels, and he’s a hitter. See Richie3Jack’s blog for Taly instruction.

Richie3Jack developing a Taly swing

Check that. I found a video of Taly swinging for all his irons and hybrids. Worth a study. Looks like a right arm bell-rope pull swing. Same as hitting but with loosened wrists.
The Taly is the fastest way to develop the flat left wrist, anti-throwaway.
Better than an impact bag. I don't have one and am not paid to endorse it.

Justin Tang, aka SingaporeSlinger, Medicus Institute

“Don’t swing like Justin. Swing like you.”

Readjusting to new lies. http://www.golfgrinder.com/forums/discussion/166/readjusting-to-new-lies. Mon, 11 Jul 2011 01:21:59 -0400 stinkler 166@/forums/discussions Some of you may have read that I recently had a club fitting, loft, lie (+4*), length and grips all done.

I had developed a strong grip for clubs that were too flat as a compensation, I also tended to hood the club somewhat to stop it going out to the right.

Well now of course I'm struggling like hell to get it all going again. I've had some good pointers from the coach, heaps of short irons and half or less shots to build it up again.

I will say the most success I had today at the range was with the ball way forward with a shortened swing, really pressing into a solid left side. Also having the club quite open at address, which feels so weird for me, but if I do this and roll through it works very well, where as before it wouldn't.

I know that I just need to be patient and keep at it, but just wondering if others have gone through this and what they did to readjust to the new set up?

I remember Dart saying of Hogan that if he had his time over again, he would work heaps on his 9i. Don't know why, maybe Dart could enlighten?

Cheers, Stink.

I think I need a change and was going to try the reverse grip. Which hand should be the dominate hand?

Your quest for a repeatable swing http://www.golfgrinder.com/forums/discussion/151/your-quest-for-a-repeatable-swing Tue, 21 Jun 2011 02:31:47 -0400 stinkler 151@/forums/discussions Hi guys, some of you may know me from the slow motion site, I'm getting real sick of waiting for posts to load so gonna hang here and thought I'd start a thread.

In my quest for a repeatable swing that will get me playing this game well, I've sort of used 3 main things. A little TGM, lessons and chats with Dart and Lynn Blake DVD, Zenolink training/PST (3D video measurement) and also clearkeys for mental control. As well as various books such as Sevam1, Elk, etc.

I'm becoming more of the opinion that we each need to balance all our influences into our own way of dealing with this strangely alluring and challenging game. For me the biggest thing to learn was how to interact with the ground in order to create speed and power without extraneous effort, of course I'm still learning.

Since we all have differing innate skill sets and abilities, I was just wondering what others feel was their main struggle/lesson in golf or what is their main influence in gaining marked improvement?

PS, don't want this to be a discussion about validity or the old golfing 'truths', just what we are in to.
