Brian Thorburn: The Future Is Bright

With only a month under my belt as the new CEO of the PGA, I want to start by saying how great it has been to meet so many within the golf community who all have a passion for the industry.

To date, I’ve been able to meet with the Divisional Committees in Qld, NSW and Victoria, as well as many Members across Australia, and am looking forward to meeting many more in the months ahead.

Heading into what will no doubt be the biggest ever year for Australian professional golf, I am confident that this will be an incredible year for all within the industry, a year that will put golf firmly on the map.

One of the highlights of the last month was definitely Andre Stolz’s win in the Indonesia PGA Championship, which was the first event of the 2011 OneAsia schedule.

For those of you who may be unaware, the PGA is a founding partner of OneAsia, an initiative we support to grow playing opportunities for our Tour members.

OneAsia has grown significantly in terms of events, prizemoney and stature since it was launched two years ago and Andre’s win serves as vindication for our involvement.

Congratulations again to Andre for the win – Andre has travelled the ups and downs of professional golf throughout his career and has always been a great supporter of Australian golf.

I hope this is the start of much more for Andre in season 2011.

With the summer of tournament golf now well and truly over the PGA is focusing considerable energy on some new initiatives aimed at growing the game.

This includes introducing non-golfers to the sport as well as growing the game at a grass roots level.

Speaking of which, our Pump Golf program is again underway with over 480 participating clubs listed on the Pump Golf website.

A highlight of the program will again be the Pump Golf Shootouts, which commenced in April and will run at clubs until mid October.

The Shootouts have been a huge success by providing junior golfers of all abilities with the opportunity to play in a national event, potentially winning a trip of a lifetime to the Pump Golf Junior Festival held at Twin Waters the week of the Australian PGA Championship.

On a broader note, we are continuing to work with Golf Australia to develop a clear pathway for junior golf and provide PGA Members and golf clubs alike with a series of linked programs and events to assist in the development of juniors at their club.

I look forward to sharing more information about this with you in the near future.
