Norman names his new Cathedral Lodge as No.1

While Greg Norman has long rated Ellerston and Brookwater as among his favourites of the many designs he has completed in Australia, that may soon be under threat.

Norman’s latest design is due to open in coming months and according to the Great White Shark, it may turn out to be the best of a long list of layouts he has designed or co-designed in Australia.

And like Ellerston, the course built for the late Kerry Packer, near Scone in the Hunter Valley, you may need a special invitation if you are hoping to get a game at this new course.

Cathedral Lodge is an 18-hole private course north-east of Melbourne, on the Goulburn River near Alexandra in the Murrindindi Shire.

Now nearing completion, Norman has described Cathedral Lodge has something quite unique and unlike any of the famous layouts he has worked on all around the world.

“It’s very special to me as there is nothing like it in Australia or the world, for that matter,” says Norman.

“Ellerston is a gem that I built because the late Kerry Packer wanted a one or two-tee golf course where you had to play exceptionally well just to score. You don’t get an opportunity to do that very often.”

“But Cathedral Lodge just may tip the scales and take No.1 spot away from Ellerston.”

Cathedral Lodge course sits on the property of former Essendon AFL president David Evans in country Victoria and by all reports is among our most spectacular and certain to appear in our regular rankings of the top 100 layouts in Australia.

Cathedral Lodge will open as a private country club with play limited to invited members and guests.
