Queensland Travel Industry aids Grantham

After the terrible events of 10 January 2011, and with the devastation that crippled the town of Grantham, the Queensland Travel Industry has united in an unprecedented way.

Through the efforts of a small committee and the amazing support of the industry, the Golf for Grantham appeal presented a cheque for $56,001 to local Councilor for the Lockyer Valley Region, Tanya Milligan to assist with the rebuilding of the town.

The organising Committee of Sharon Hando, Danny Roche, Kim Tomlinson and Peter Balmer started with a small idea of holding a golf day at Carbrook Golf Club to raise money for the town of Grantham after they were moved by the events of January 10.

With the support of the golf club and General Manager, Scott Wagstaff, the day grew to a maximum field of 144 golfers in a matter of days.

“The day was bigger than we could have imagined and the support from the companies within the industry was phenomenal”, commented committee member Sharon Hando.

The golf day itself raised a little over $17,000 due to the support of the companies on board, and the ‘deep pockets’ of those that attended the day who purchased raffle tickets in an effort to win some of the amazing $40,000 worth of prizes.

The fundraising didn’t stop there though with other contributions after the day, including $4,000 from All Crowd Catering, $7,000 from Ian Hunter from Cruising Down Under and an amazing donation from Flight Centre matched the final $28,000 raised taking the total to $56,001.
