Golf Australia announces 2018 Rookie Squad

Too often ace amateurs turn professional and find the grind and ‘going it alone’ too tough to handle.

Thankfully for at least nine of Australia’s rookie professionals, that is not the case.

Golf Australia have announced a squad of nine rookies who will benefit from their support as they chase fame and fortune on some of the toughest tours in the world.

Six of last year’s squad – Su Oh, Todd Sinnott, Ryan Ruffels, Brett Coletta, Hannah Green and Australian Open champion Cameron Davis – have again been named among the nine to receive special support.

Now Lucas Herbert and new pros Travis Smyth and Karis Davidson have been added to the squad.

Golf Australia high performance director Brad James explained he would carry high hopes for the stellar 2018 squad for their continued progress on international stages, with many having already taken large strides.

“We have already been delighted with the results these and previous members of the rookie squad have produced in years past and we believe those results have been made easier to achieve by the safety net the program affords them,” said James.

“We have been very excited with the way of our amateur athletes performed again in 2016, so we’re excited to have Karis and Travis take the natural step up,” James said.
