Golfers swap clubs for boards at Slater’s Surf Ranch
What is it about surfing and golf? Surfers, it seems, love to play golf…and some like Kelly Slater are pretty good at it too with the multiple world champion playing off low single figures.
Yet golfers, especially some of the best ones, get just as big a kick out of riding the waves as well.
So much so that when Slater invited his good mate Adam Scott and Rafa Cabrera Bello to his surf ranch in California, they jumped at the chance.
“I was impressed from the start and feel really lucky to be invited out here,” said Scott.
Slater agreed: “I’ve been friends with Adam Scott for a number of years,” he said.
“And I recently became friends with Rafa and I know they love surfing.”
Slater’s ranch produces 50 types of man-made waves, a project Slater and his team had worked on for eight years.
“It’s become a sort of spectacle in the surf world and beyond,” said Slater.
Scott and Cabrera Bello watched Kelly surf the first couple of waves and they then showed off their own surfing skills.
“I was happy with my first two waves,” said Scott. “I felt like I’ve surfed the best waves of my life today.”
“It’s a great way to re-energise and clear the head and gets the adrenalin pumping.
Cabrero-Bella agreed: “The best I’ve ever surfed,” he grinned.
