Nicklaus in hot water over Trump voting post

It’s not the first time Jack Nicklaus has backed Donald Trump for President, however, with all that has happened in the US over the past four years, his enthusiastic endorsement has lost him more than a few fans this time around.

Nicklaus posted a statement to his Twitter and Instagram accounts as the US heads to one of most divisive elections in living memory.

“Through the years, I have been blessed to personally know several Presidents on both sides of the aisle,” said Nicklaus.

“I have had the privilege over the last 3½ years to get to know our current President a little more as his term has progressed.”

“I have been very disappointed at what he’s had to put up with from many directions, but with that, I have seen a resolve and a determination to do the right thing for our country. He has delivered on his promises.”

“He’s worked for the average person. In my opinion, he has been more diverse than any President I have seen and has tried to help people from all walks of life — equally.”

“You might not like the way our President says or tweets some things – and trust me, I have told him that! – but I have learned to look past that and focus on what’s tried to accomplish. His love for America and its citizens, and putting his country first, has come through loud and clear.”

“I know we are only a few days from Nov. 3 and Election Day, but I am certain many of you have not yet made up your minds.”

“But if we want to continue to have the opportunity to pursue the American Dream, and not evolve into a socialist America and have the government run your life, then I strongly recommend you consider Donald J. Trump for another 4 years”

“I certainly have and have already cast my vote for him!”

Unsurprisingly his words have drawn a polarised response with a majority of fans posting their disgust with the statement while some fans were quick to come to the 80-year-old’s defence.

“It’s with a broken heart that I have taken down all of my Nicklaus pictures books and paraphernalia from my man cave and just dropped it all of at the Salvation Army.” (@elidst01)

“Super disappointing. My father was one of your biggest fans. We watched golf my way 100x. He said “he was my hero.” You let a lot of people down with this message. You should have kept that one to yourself.” (@BixlawDomNation)

However, others are backing Nicklaus all the way.

“Jack Nicklaus is a true patriot, a legend who believes in values and rule of law. His choice of Trump for president is a reflection of a man exemplary in every way. A man gifted with discernment and wisdom. Thank you for your courage.”

Of course, Nicklaus was well aware that what he was posting would cause quite a stir.

“I knew when I did that that I would have certain percentage of the people (who) are not Trump fans and a certain percent of the people (who) are,” said Nicklaus in a later interview about the tweet.

“And I know it was going to cause me some grief.”
