2011 Queensland Amateur gets underway

There was a number of enthralling contests on day one at the Queensland Men’s and Women’s Amateur Championships which began this morning at Arundel Hills Golf and Country Club on the Gold Coast.

One of the most exciting matches of the day involved Queensland Women’s State Team member Ali Orchard, who holed out for an ace on hole number twelve a 169 metre par 3. This ace assisted her in a 4 & 3 victory against Parkwood member Zoie Cooper.

Orchard will face a tough battle tomorrow when she meets Lauren Sinclair (Heidelburg) who today accounted for Queensland player Elmay Viking (Nudgee) 3 & 2.

Other winners included Ashley Ona (Gailes) over Amy Walsh (Emerald Lakes) 11 & 9.

Courtney Massey (Southport) was defeated by Burleigh member Corinne Swan 3 & 1, Jessica Horton (Oxley) proved too strong for Opefie Rague (Tina) after a convincing 10 & 8 victory.

First place qualifier and defending Champion Saki Suzuki (Lakelands) showed good form in her first match with a 5 & 3 victory over Emerald Lakes member Ellesha Michie.

In Match seven Fabienne In-Albon (Manly) and Jessica Park (Brisbane) were unable to finish their match due to the afternoon storm which made the greens unplayable. Fabienne is one up playing their 36th hole. Both players will return tomorrow to finish their match.

In the Men’s Amateur Championship first place qualifier Daniel McGraw (Gailes) and Jarrod Freeman (Concord) were unable to finish due to the afternoon storm even though they managed to complete all 36 holes, when play was suspended both players were unable to be separated. They will Tee off from hole 1 tomorrow to play their 37th hole for a sudden death result.

Queensland State Colt Team member Luke Marino (Surfers Paradise) and Maverick Antcliff (Indooroopilly) fought out a 33 hole battle which Maverick eventually proved to be victor 4 & 3.

One of the strong favourites for this weeks event Cameron Smith (Royal Queensland), proceeded through to the second day after beating NSW Colts team member Luke Humphries (Pymble) 3 & 2.

Queensland Men’s Team member Blake McGrory (Sanctuary Cove) was convincing over Mitchell Smith (Oxley) 6 & 5.

In other matches Tim Hart (Indooroopilly) defeated Aaron Wilkin (Wynnum) 2 up.

Gold Coast Country Club member Jonathan Holder had a convincing win over State boy’s team member Sam Daley (Wynnum) 9 & 8.

Dimitrios Papadatos (Toukley) also defeated St Helens member Cory Crawford 3 & 2.

Jake Higginbottom (The Australian) was dominant all day eventually winning 9 & 8 to tenth place qualifier Adam Mollis (Noosa Springs).

Play will get under way on Arundel Hills Country Club from 7:30am tomorrow morning.
