Amateur Lewis breaks record to lead Open

20-year-old amateur Tom Lewis has taken a share of the first round lead alongside Thomas Bjorn after carding a five-under 65 – the lowest by an amateur at the British Open.

Lewis, who played alongside five-time British Open champion, Tom Watson, took advantage of the favourable afternoon conditions, firing off four birdies over his final five holes.

“Obviously it’s one day. I’m going to have to play just as well as I did today tomorrow. I’m going to have tough moments tomorrow. So as long as I limit my mistakes and shoot 70 or below, then I’ll be more than happy.”

Kurt Barnes sits on top of the Australasian leaderboard after closing with a 2-under 68 to finish in a 12-way tie for 6th place.

Adam Scott is a shot further back alongside fellow countryman, Victoria’s Robert Allenby, following a round of 1-under 69.

While Tiger Woods is at home recuperating, Steve Williams is back on Scott’s bag and the world number 17 knows what a difference that can make.

“He’s been there so many Sundays with Tiger. Like I said, it might just be that one comment at the right time, and he knows to back you off a shot or get you to go on a shot, and it makes a difference.”

Pre-tournament favourite, Jason Day, struggled on day one.

At one point during his back nine holes, the world number 8 was at 3-over but a birdie at the 13th and 15th holes left him six strokes off the pace at the close of play today.

“I made a few mistakes out there, but not bad, especially obviously considering that I haven’t had a lot of experience playing links golf. I kept myself in there, a couple birdies coming home was nice to see. I was 3-over there for a minute, and I had to do something.”

“But I’m not too far behind the lead, which is good. Anything can happen…so obviously I’m looking forward to the next three days.”
