Artis second in Sweden as Schreefel wins

Holland’s Dewi Claire Schreefel turned a two shot overnight lead into a seven shot romp over defending champion Rebecca Artis from Australia, winning her first title on the Ladies European Tour at the Helsingborg Open in Sweden.

Schreefel closed with her best round of the tournament, a six-under 66, to finish with a total of total of 271 – 17 under par – at the Vasatorps Golf Club.

The 28-year-old was given a run for her money by Artis who had three straight birdies from the 10th and another on 14, but Schreefel was able to counter with birdies of her own on 10, 12, 14 and 15.

Artis’ bogey on 16 gave Schreefel a comfortable cushion which was extended further when Artis bogeyed the final hole and Schreefel birdied.

“It’s a good way to win. Rebecca had a good chase on and I was glad to be playing well to keep up with her and I can’t find a better way to win that this,” said Schreefel.

Fresh from a third place finish in Scotland last week, Artis was brilliant in her title defence but found Schreefel a tough nut to crack.

“I chased late in the back nine, birdied 10, 11, 12 and 14 but she was matching me, so there was not much I could do about it,” said the 25-year-old Australian.

“I probably didn’t play my best golf on the front nine; I needed to get it going early and make some birdies early and put pressure on her and I didn’t do that.”

“I turned one over through nine and I made a bit of flurry on the back nine and a charge but every time I made a birdie she matched me.”

“I played pretty good golf out there today and was happy with my effort and what can I say? Second when I come back to defend: I’m happy with that.”

Dame Laura Davies finished a stroke further behind in third place after a final round 66 and Australians Nikki Campbell and Nikki Garrett continued their recent good form by claiming a share of seventh place at four-under.

Campbell will now head to France this week to join Karrie Webb, Minjee Lee, Katherine Kirk, Sarah Jane Smith, Linsey Wright and Sarah Kemp at The Evian Championship, the final major of the year, taking place at Evian Resort Golf Course.
