Barty to play under Ernie Els in new Icons Series

Fresh from retirement as the world’s number one tennis player, Ash Barty is now taking her golf game from Brisbane to the world.

The Queenslander has been named as part of Ernie Els’ Rest of the World team for the Icons Series event at New Jersey’s Liberty National Golf Club starting June 30.

The Icon Series brings together stars of the sporting world including English football captain, Harry Kane, 23 gold medallist swimmer, Michael Phelps and multi-world title winning boxer, Oscar De La Hoya in a competition that will be played as a 9-hole team matchplay event similar to the Ryder and Presidents Cup.

Team USA will be captained by Fred Couples and will line up against Team Rest of the World with14 players in each team.

“I’m excited to be part of the Icons Series and I hope through my participation in the series that we can encourage more women and girls to participate in golf around the world,” said Barty.

“It’s such a unique opportunity to have fun, test yourself and compete against the world’s greatest athletes in a sport that we are all so passionate about. I can’t wait to experience Liberty National and learn from our iconic captain, Ernie Els. I hope all the Aussie fans in New York and New Jersey come out to cheer us on.”

Both Team USA and Team World will announce additional Icons to the event lineup in the coming weeks.

Overlooking New York’s Manhattan skyline, the Liberty National Golf Club was previously home to the 2017 Presidents Cup and last played host to the Northern Trust, part of the FedExCup Playoff Series, last year.
