Melbourne’s Stephanie Bunque, 20, and Sydney’s Sophie Yip, just 13, have both qualified for the 2018 US Women’s Amateur Championship, scheduled for August 6-12 at The Golf Club of Tennessee, Kingston Springs, Tennessee.

Bunque, a member of the Victoria Golf Club, was one of five women playing extra holes for three spots at Birmingham Country Club in Detroit and advanced with a quality birdie on the first hole.

Yip, a member at Concord Golf Club, made two late birdies to reach a two-woman playoff, before advancing from Woodburn, Oregon, after accounting for US Collegiate based Tara Finigan.

Yip, who turns 14 this month, was making her first attempt to qualify and holed a stunning chip-in for birdie on the second play-off hole.

Bunque, the reigning Victorian Amateur champion, has been playing steady golf in the US including a tied 4th at the Porter Cup last month as well as reaching the match play section of the Western Amateur.

A record 1468 entries were received for the US Women’s Amateur which included qualifiers from 23 sites.
