Coolum a special place for Ogilvy

Geoff Ogilvy will return to the site of his only Australian victory to contest the Australian PGA Championship from December 9.

The 2006 US Open Champion and winner of three World Golf Championship events will return to the Hyatt Regency Coolum on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast with fond memories after his thrilling one-shot victory over Mathew Goggin in 2008.

“It’s a really cool place the Hyatt Coolum. I won there a couple of years ago so it’s got a special place in my golfing schedule,” Ogilvy said.

“The Australian PGA is obviously one of Australia’s most historic tournaments and one we can all bring our families to and have a great week.

“It’s the last week of the year and I would go as far to say that even taking the hyperactive field that the Majors have and how cool they are, in one way the PGA at Coolum is probably the most enjoyable golf tournament we play all year.

“To have the Australian PGA on your mantelpiece is a feather in your cap for sure.”

Ogilvy’s confirmation adds to another stellar field, which includes colourful American John Daly and defending champion Robert Allenby, and Ogilvy believes he has the form to give the title another shake.

“The form is pretty good. I had a rough middle of the year but towards the end of the year I’m starting to feel it a little bit and starting to look forward to playing golf again, so positive signs ahead,” Ogilvy said.

The Australian PGA Championship will be the final tournament on both the PGA Tour of Australasia and OneAsia Order of Merit, with players competing for a total prize pool of AUD$1,500,000.

The tournament will be showcased on OneAsia’s television platform with live coverage for four hours a day across all four tournament days, and broadcast to over 260 million homes in more than 40 countries.
