Felton trailed by two strokes at the start of the day’s play, but holed a number of crucial putts throughout the round sinking a 20 foot putt for eagle on the 11th to get within two shots of the leader at that stage, Andrew Schonewillie.
When Felton sunk another critical putt on the 15th for birdie he forged to the lead and continued on from there for another major amateur title.
“I knew I was playing well so I just kept to my game plan and it’s paid off,” said Felton.
“I holed some good putts down the stretch and was able to finish it off. It was a good day on the greens, and a good week apart from the first round, which I really struggled but it was good to bounce back.”
Schonewillie would close with an even par round to finish in third position at 6-under par, a stroke behind Sinnott and three from Felton.
Felton had opened the tournament with a 74 to be seven from the leaders and looked to be out of the tournament. A second round 64 bounced the world no. 66 back into contention where he followed with a third round 2-under 70.
“I was able to hold it together out there,” said Felton who closed with a final round 68.
“It was an emotional win. My sponsor’s wife passed away and when I first joined Gosnells they were the first people I met. I’ve known both of them for 12 years and they’ve really helped me with my golf, so it was good to get the win today.”
Felton is the only player to win the Mandurah Amateur in consecutive years in the tournament’s 22-year history. The win also confirms Felton’s status as one of our most promising players currently playing in the amateur ranks.
At 19, Felton has to his credit twelve top-10 finishes from fourteen starts in 2014, including a runner-up finish in the the Saujana Amateur Open in Singapore. Felton was also medallist at the 2013 Queensland Amateur and won the Perth City Invitational in the same year.
