Masters Week: Nicklaus vs Norman at the ’86 Masters

Yes, it is hard to watch…very hard.

There’s Greg Norman, who had birdied his last four holes to sit in a tie with a red-hot Jack Nicklaus heading up the 18th hole.

Norman puts his final drive of the tournament in perfect position. He lines up his second shot into the green, needing to birdie the hole for a win or a simple par to move into a playoff with the-then 46-year-old Nicklaus.

To this day what happens next is hard to believe.

“During my career, when I first started playing the game, sport psychologists weren’t part of your team,” said Norman later in life.

“But if I had the ability to trust someone to give me advice or help me with my attitude, damn right I would have been a better player.”
