Mickelson goes back-to-back on Champions Tour

Phil Mickelson became the third player and second this year to win his first two starts on the PGA Tour Champions, overtaking Mike Weir with a back-nine birdie blitz on Sunday to claim the Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

Mickelson closed with a 7-under 65 to finish at 17-under for a three stroke winning margin over second-round leader Weir.

“That kind of fried me a little bit,” said Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion. “I was able to play a good back nine. That’s something I’ve been working on and it’ll give me something to work on in the coming weeks as we head into Augusta.”

Mickelson won at Ozarks National back in August in his first start on the PGA Tour Champions and with Sunday’s victory joins Bruce Fleischer and Jim Furyk as the only players to win in their first two PGA Tour Champions events.

“What a fun week,” said Mickelson. “We’re only a month away from the Masters and this was a good way to get the momentum going.”

Winless on the PGA Tour since early 2019, Mickelson is now preparing to return to the PGA Tour starting this week with the ZOZO Championship, which was relocated from Japan to Southern California this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a week off, he’ll play in the Houston Open as his final preparation for the Masters Tournament on Nov. 12-15.

At 50-years-old, Mickelson will be seeking to become the oldest Masters Champion.

Jack Nicklaus won the Masters in 1986 at 46 years and 2 months. Julius Boros holds the record for oldest major winner. He won the 1968 PGA Championship at 48 years, 4 months.

However, players are in a much better position physically to play longer these days and if Mickelson is on his game that week he could certainly be well in the mix come Masters Sunday.
