Minjee Lee misses in Taiwan playoff as Korda wins

Aussie Minjee Lee has narrowly missed claiming another LPGA Tour title going down in a playoff on Sunday at the Taiwan Swinging Skirts championship.

It was 2018 champion American Nelly Korda who hoisted the trophy for a second straight year after starting the final round with a three-stroke advantage over Lee and a four-shot lead over Caroline Masson.

Korda and Minjee Lee both birdied the final hole of regulation to finish at 18-under and force a playoff with Caroline Masson, who shot a 68.

Korda won her back-to-back title with a perfect 5-hybrid to set up a birdie on the first playoff hole to collect her third LPGA title.

“I kept telling myself, from the heart, from the heart, from the heart, because I was very nervous because it was my first playoff,” said Korda.

“The wind kind of brought it back in. I made a couple 3-putts on the back. It just gets away from you so fast, and Caroline made a couple putts and she was one ahead of me on 17. I was like, geez, I have to make a birdie here. Jason [McDede] gave me a little pep talk going from 17 to 18, win or get into a playoff, so he was definitely great today.”

Korda is the first American with multiple wins in the 2019 season and the third player to successfully defend her title, joining Brooke Henderson at the Lotte Championship and Danielle Kang at the BMW Ladies Championship.

Aussie Sarah Oh carded a top-10 result finishing in a share of 8th position at 11-under. Katherine Kirk was the next best Australian finishing in a share of 55th position with Hannah Green in a share of 74th.
