O’Hern rues missed chance at St. Jude

Australia’s Nick O’Hern has narrowly missed a chance at claiming his first US PGA title after surrendering his overnight lead with a pedestrian 1-under (69) on the final day of the FedEx St. Jude Classic in Memphis, Tennessee.

O’Hern, who shared the overnight lead on 6-under following rounds of 70-67-67, could only match four birdies with three pars to eventually relinquish his lead to a resurgent Dustin Johnson.

Johnson, who had only recently returned from three months off with a back injury, closed with a 4-under 66 to finish at 9-under, one stroke ahead of John Merrick.

O’Hern took home US$268,800 for his third place finish, which also moved him past the US$7 million mark in US PGA Tour career earnings.

Robert Allenby was the next best Australian on 6-under in a tie for 7th.

Gavin Coles closed the tournament in equal 42nd with Stuart Appleby a shot back in 49th place. Steven Bowditch (T68) and Mathew Goggin (T74) finished well down the leaderboard.
