Ruffels best of the Aussies at Western Amateur
Ryan Ruffels finished the best of the strong Australian contingent at the Western Amateur held at Rich Harvest Farms in Chicago.
Ruffels and Harrison Endycott were the only two Australians to qualify in the leading sixteen who advanced to the Match Play segment and tournament proper with Endycott eliminated in round one and Ruffels in the quarter final.

Ruffels secured a 5&4 victory over New Zealander Luke Toomey in the opening round before going down 4&3 to American Robby Shelton, the medallist in qualifying, in the quarter final.
Endycott was beaten by the eventual winner American Dawson Armstrong, 5&4, in the first round.
Ruffels’ next tournament is the US Amateur in a fortnight and following this week’s strong performance at the Western Amateur sees him climbing to 10th in the R&A World Amateur ranking to be our highest ranked male amateur with Lucas Herbert the next best Aussie currently sitting 35th.
Armstrong, ranked 158th in the world, holed-out for eagle from a greenside bunker to defeat fellow American Aaron Wise on the second sudden-death playoff hole to win the Western Amateur title for his biggest career victory to date.
The world’s elite amateurs will have the opportunity to add the biggest prize in amateur golf in the US Amateur starting 17 August in Olympia Fields, south of Chicago.
