Ruffels downs top seed at Australian Amateur

Ryan Ruffels is arguably the most dangerous 64th seed ever to be playing the Australian Men’s Amateur Championship.

This was confirmed this morning when Ruffels, 16, accounted for top-seed, Englishman Ryan Evans 3&2 in the opening round to elimination match play.

The signs that Ruffels’ game was on form were shown last week at Royal Melbourne where Ruffels played the last two rounds at 2-under when the majority of the high class field went backwards as the West Course showed its teeth.

Other impressive wins this morning in Adelaide included Josh Munn, winner of the 2013 Lake Macquarie Amateur accounting for Cory Crawford, 3&2, Jordan Zunic securing a 3&2 win over Jake Baker, Todd Sinnott, runner-up to Simon Viitakangas at the Australian Master of the Amateurs progressing through with a 3&2 win over Daniel Gale, with Vittakangas also progressing.

Taylor MacDonald is through following a 3&2 win over Lucas Herbert in a match-up of two of our biggest heavyweights in amateur golf.

This was a tremendous victory for MacDonald, giving the Queenslander not only the confidence but momentum in these championships.

The second round of 32 commences tomorrow at the Grange Golf Course with the afternoon seeing the top-16 battle for the weekend.
