Rumford secures place in World Matchplay
Brett Rumford’s ‘life changing’ back-to-back victories in Korea and China this month have secured him one of the final places in the field for the 50th staging of the Volvo World Match Play Championship in Bulgaria from May 16-19.
Rumford jumped 173 places to No. 76 in the world rankings with his fantastic fortnight’s work and joined final invitee, Henrik Stenson, in rounding out a 24-man field that includes fellow Aussie Geoff Ogilvy and 14 of the world’s top 50 players.

“I feel very honoured to have won (the Volvo China Open) and one of the great things about it is that it gets me into a fantastic event like the Volvo World Match Play Championship. It’s another stepping stone in my career, and I’m really looking forward to teeing it up against so many great players,” said Rumford.
The event has a rich and storied history having been played at the Wentworth Club in London until 2009. This year’s event will mark the first occasion a full European Tour event will be held in Bulgaria, at the stunning Gary Player-designed Thracian Cliffs Golf and Beach Resort.
Also in the line-up are European Ryder Cup matchplay heroes Ian Poulter, who won this tournament in 2011, Graeme McDowell, Peter Hanson, Francesco Molinari and defending champion Nicolas Colsaerts.
Other notables include Bo Van Pelt, Carl Pettersen and in-form tournament debutants Thorbjørn Olesen and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano.
The winner will take home €800,000 from the total prize fund of €3,000,000.
