Senden leads Aussies at Akron

John Senden is three shots from the lead in a tie for third after the opening round of the World Golf Championships Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron.

Senden fired a four-under-par, 66, to be within striking distance of American leader Jim Furyk, whose impressive seven-under 63 allowed for a two-stroke lead over Englishman Lee Slattery who fired a 65.

Senden sits tied with world No.1 Luke Donald, Masters champion Bubba Watson plus Ben Crane, Simon Dyson and Rafael Cabrera Bello.

Geoff Ogilvy was the next best Australian in a tie for ninth at three-under par.

Defending champion Adam Scott is eight shots off the pace in a tie for 41st after opening with a 71 in his first competitive round since The Open.

Marc Leishman posted even par 70 in his WGC Bridgestone debut to be tied with seven time event champion and former world No.1 Tiger Woods in 31st.
