Smith lone Aussie in FedExCup Playoffs finale
And then there was one. Queensland’s Cameron Smith is now the lone Aussie to make it through to the Tour Championship starting this Thursday at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia.
Smith dropped from 3rd to 5th place in the FedExCup standings after finishing in 34th place on 11-under and 16 strokes outside of the thrilling six-hole playoff between Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Cantlay at the BMW Championship.

Smith sits behind Cantlay, who moved from 4th to 1st with his defeat of DeChambeau, Tony Finau (2nd), Bryson DeChambeau (3rd up from 9th) and Jon Rahm (4th). Smith’s fifth position earns him a 5-under start in the 30-man Tour Championship with Cantlay earning poll position on 10-under.
Aside from an opening round of 73, Cam Davis put on an impressive display of golf with subsequent rounds of 67, 67 and 69 leaving him in 29th place. However, it was not enough with the New South Welshman sliding back one spot on the FedExCup ladder to 37th and just seven points outside of heading to Atlanta.
Marc Leishman finished 51st and 42nd place on the FedExCup points list and Matt Jones was tied for 38th and fell to 47th in the PGA Tour’s race to riches.
With final round play like we saw on Sunday between Cantlay and DeChambeau, Smith will need to bring some of the magic he displayed at the Northern Trust if he has any chance at claiming the FedExCup crown and the $US15 million first prize.
