Smith secures first solo Tour title in Sony playoff
Queensland’s Cameron Smith has won his second PGA Tour title in a stunning finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
Smith was two shots behind with two holes to play before making a 3-metre putt for birdie on the final hole to force a playoff after leader Steele made a costly bogey at the par-3 17th hole to fall back to 11-under.
When Steele failed to get up and down on the first playoff hole, Smith was left with a simple two-putt par from inside 4-metres to secure his first solo PGA Tour win.
“I just had to hang in there. No one was playing good golf today seemed like. Conditions got a lot easier at the end there, but just hung in there, and what do you know,” said Smith.
“I’ve been out here four or five years now, and to finally say that I have won an event by myself is quite good…that’s been one that I’ve wanted to tick off for a long time.”

Smith’s only previous win on the PGA Tour was a team title alongside Jonas Blixt at the Zurich Classic in 2017.
