Tiger text inspires Rory in Houston
Rory McIlroy sent Tiger Woods a text message on Tuesday morning, congratulating him on winning at Bay Hill and regaining his world number crown.
The 77-time PGA Tour winner responded with a fairly candid instruction, starting at this week’s Shell Houston Open.
“I texted Tiger and congratulated him and he replied by telling me to get my finger out my ass,” said McIlroy.
“He gives me a lot of grief and I try to give him some back. But it’s good. He’s fun to be around.”
McIlroy skipped last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational to spend time practising and watching girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki play tennis.
The 23-year-old has had an awful start to the year but his final round 65 and tie for eighth at the WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral two weeks ago has him thinking optimistically about the near future.
“The weekend at Doral was great and the way I’ve been hitting the ball recently.”
“I’ve just got to keep working on it. I definitely feel like it’s going in the right direction.”
McIlroy will play the Houston Open this week at the Redstone Golf Club while Woods is absent.
Defending champion Hunter Mahan and a whole host of in-form players, plus quite a few that are desperate to play well this week to sneak into The Masters, will ensure McIlroy’s road back to the top will not be easy.
