Top field for first PGA Tour event in Asia
An exciting field for the first official PGA Tour FedExCup event in Asia has been confirmed with the announcement of an additional three big names to tee it up in Malaysia next month.
American Bubba Watson, South African Ernie Els and Spain’s Sergio Garcia are latest additions to the field joining Open Champion Phil Mickelson, Brandt Snedeker, Rickie Fowler, Keegan Bradley, Hideki Matsuyama and defending champion, Nick Watney competing for official FedExCup points for the first time.
Entering its fourth year, the $7m CIMB Classic forms part of the Tour’s new 2013/2014 ‘wraparound’ schedule and will be played from 24 -27 October at the highly regarded Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, designed by Australian brothers Ted and Geoff Parslow.
The winner will also receive a two-year exemption on the PGA Tour and an invitation to the 2014 Masters.
“With its ascension to a full-fledged US PGA tour event, the CIMB Classic is now Malaysia’s biggest international sporting event and will showcase golf in our country to at least 700 million viewers worldwide,” said Dato’ Sri Nazir Razak, Group Chief Executive of CIMB Group.
“This is a stellar field and the strongest ASEAN has ever seen – 20 of the Top 50 players in the world, 15 major championship victories and 170 PGA Tour wins collectively.”
Former Masters Champion Watson will play in the CIMB Classic for the first time while four-time major champion Els will compete for a second time after finishing T5 in 2010.
Other notables include 2011 FedExCup champion Bill Haas, 2012 U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, 2010 Open Champion Stewart Cink and Australians Marc Leishman, Matt Jones and Aaron Baddeley.
The complete field will comprise 60 players from the PGA Tour, the top 10 available players from the Asian Tour Order of Merit and eight sponsor exemptions.
