Video: Norman claims first major title at 1986 Open
1986 marked the year that Greg Norman finally won his first major title, one of only two in his career.
After opening with a 74, Norman put himself back in contention with a second round 63 to lead the tournament by two shots, a position he would maintain for the rest of the tournament despite another 74 on Saturday.
The then-31-year-old won by five strokes over Gordon Brand Jr after finishing runner-up to Jack Nicklaus at the Masters that year. He would also finish outright second to Bob Tway at the PGA Championship a month later. Despite his near misses he closed out the year as the world’s No.1 golfer – a position he would hold for a total 331 weeks.
