Volvik RACV Ladies Masters attracts star field

One of the cornerstone events on the Australian Ladies Professional Golf Tour, the popular and long-running Volvik RACV Ladies Masters, has shaken off early sponsorship concerns and will again feature a field of outstanding quality from 1-3 February 2013 at the RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast.

The 24th consecutive staging of the co-sanctioned event – reduced to 54 holes this year – will be headlined by reigning British Open champion Jiyai Shin, former US Open champion So Yeon Ryu and Hall of Famer and seven-time champion, Karrie Webb, who returns after missing the event in 2012.

These players are the tip of the iceberg in a talented field descending on the Gold Coast from all corners of the globe, hoping to snatch the title from defending champion, Christel Boeljon from The Netherlands.

Other star players on show include 2012 Ladies European Tour Order of Merit winner Spaniard Carlota Ciganda, defending ISPS Handa Women’s Australian Open champion Jessica Korda and American Cheyenne Woods, who is the niece of Tiger Woods.

All of the above would be expected to feature for the title but players currently playing the ALPG events in the hot Australian summer will be well acclimatised to the conditions and are already showing their form.

Victorian Stacey Keating won twice in Europe last season and was victorious at The Vintage this month while Sweden’s 2011 Solheim Cup star, Caroline Hedwall, has made the trip to Australia earlier than European peers shivering in arctic conditions back home and was a winner in the recent Mt Broughton Pro-Am.

Talented young West Australian Whitney Hillier and Coffs Harbour product Emma de Groot have both been in blistering form this past month and will also be worth watching closely at Royal Pines, as will colourful American Christina Kim who is looking to resurrect her form after a poor 2012.

The Volvik RACV Ladies Masters will be broadcast by ABC Sport, live throughout Australia, on Friday 1 February between 3pm and 6pm, Saturday 2 February between 3pm to 6pm and Sunday 3 February between 2pm to 6pm.
